Default Burning Crusade 70 pre-raid tank gear

I've been going through the various plate gear for good tank pieces, and after quite a bit of research I've come up with a fairly easy to acquire set which will give a high damage mitigation. It, of course, won't help you hold aggro, so this isn't the ideal tanking set, far from it. It's simply a small guide of pieces you can get without raiding / spending a fortune. I have to say that I am very surprised to see that most of the non-raid tank gear is incredibly easy to acquire, and they're not far behind Tier 4 at all. Most of them is a quest or quest line, which means you won't have to go into many instances severely undergeared as a tank as long as you've gotten the other pieces.

The comparison table I've used is..

11 Agi = 6 Sta = 129 AC = 5 def ratings = 6 dodge rating = 9 parry rating = 11 block rating = 16 block value = 13 resilience

Again, this is not necessarily the best way to tank, it's merely the best way to mitigate damage. It's the rough numbers that tankpoints use, and after some numbercrunching I've come to agree with that almost completely.

Please note that this doesn't begin to take sockets into account. It's just far too much work to figure out exactly which is best for which socket, and how hard each are to acquire etc. Things like Felsteel Helm and Pauldrons of Brute Force can become quite a bit better with proper socketing, and might just beat what I have listed if done correctly. Again, it's not that big of an issue, and I'm not quite that dedicated.

Chest:
Vindicator's Hauberk - Revered with Aldor. The best of them, and very easy to get if you're Aldor.

Jade-Skull Breastplate is a very good substitute if you're not. Drops from the second boss in Tempest Keep: Mechanar.

Legs:
Legguards of the Resolute Defender - From the quest Destroy Niberius! in Netherstorm. Quest line that begins with Malevolent Remnants. Just look at those stats! +69 stamina? Jeebus.

Helm:
Greathelm of the Unbreakable - from the first boss in Hellfire Citadel: Shattered Halls. Not sure just how easy this is to get, so the second alternative is..

Felsteel Helm - crafted. No rare mats, a rough estimate of Horde-side Hyjal prices places this at 50-70g (note that set bonus is only available for blacksmiths).

Shoulders:
Nexus-Guard's Pauldrons - from a Netherstorm quest line that begins with the quest Run a Diagnostic!. Don't let the color of these fool you, the stats are awesome.

Gloves:
Gauntlets of the Chosen - revered with Scryer. Very, very nice gloves, and if you're Scryer they're just as easy to get as Aldor's Vindicator's Hauberk. Alternative for Aldor is..

Thatia's Self-Correcting Gauntlets - BoE drop from The Arcatraz. I've seen them on the AH for as low as 300g, which isn't much in BC. But at the same time, a cheaper/easier to get alternative would be..

Felsteel Gloves - crafted. Two felsteel bars less than the helm/legs, so maybe 40-50g estimation on Hyjal Horde AH.

Feet:
Flesh Beast's Metal Greaves - from the Auchindoun: Mana Tombs escort quest.

Waist:
Sha'Tari Vindicator's Waistguard - from a Tempest Keep: Mechanar quest line that begins with the Netherstorm quest Consortium Crystal Collection.

Girdle of the Lost Vindicator - from the Netherstorm quest line that begins with the quest Sunfury Briefings, which might be Aldor only.

Wrist:
Junior Technician's 3rd Grade Bracers - from the Netherstorm quest line Off To Area 52 (which is just a very short line, with a quick delivery and a very easy pick-items-from-ground-quest). Again, don't let the color fool you. +42 stam and +11 defense rating on -wrists-? That's just amazingly impressive.

Cloak:
Cloak of Eternity - Crafted. Takes quite a bit of netherweave, but nothing overly hard to get. Finchette on the Horde side can craft this (make sure you give her a big tip as the recipe for this is absoultely insanely rare).

Weapon:
If you're after a tanking weapon, remember that if it's a weapon over 60dps, 1.7s is the magic number that decides whether you should HS or Devastate. Over 1.7, devastate. Under 1.7s, HS. For a higher end weapon with tanking stats, you're looking for...

Warbringer or Honor's Call - which you can purchase from Thrallmar/Honor Hold exalted rep. That's not exactly easy to get, so the next is..

Temporal Rift - exalted with Keepers of Time. While it doesn't have a lot of tanking stats, I feel the need to point it out for the amazing proc. It stacks with thunderclap and works even on the big, nasty bosses. Imp. Thunderclap talent and this together is a 28% damage reduction from melee attacks!

Millennium Blade - drops from second boss in Caverns of Time: Black Morass. +19 stam, +21 resillience and a great look to boot!

Shield:
Aegis of the Sunbird - from the second boss in Tempest Keep: Botanica. The droprate is somewhat poor, so second is..

Platinum Shield of the Valorous - from the first boss in Auchindoun: Shadow Labyrinth. Third in line is..

Crest of the Sha'tar - exalted with The Sha'tar. Now, it's not particularly hard to get, but past friendly you only get rep from the very rare occasional quest and mobs in Tempest Keep. It'll take a LOT of runs, so here's another alternative that's easier to get..

Netherwing Protector's Shield - a rather tricky quest line that begins with Kindness and leads on to a 5-man group quest to kill a lvl 72 elite. Not hard, per se, but requires a few people with flying mounts.

Neck:
Thalodien's Charm - Netherstorm quest line that begins with the Manaforge B'naar quest. There is a neck piece with identical stats that you can pick up called..

Natasha's Battle Chain - from a Blade's Edge quest line thet begins with a random drop (Damaged Mask from the Fel Corruptors, the ones sporting warlock T3), quest being Damanged Mask.

Rings (remember, you need two, but it shouldn't be too hard to get two of these):
Elementium Band of the Sentry - from the final boss in Tempest Keep: The Arcatraz. Not exactly the kind of instance I'd want to PUG, but at least it's a 5-man.

Protector's Mark of the Redemption - Shadowmoon Valley quest line that begins with The Path of Conquest (Horde) or The Path of Conquest (Alliance).

Iron Band of the Unbreakable - Lieutenant Drake in Old Hillsbrad Foothills (Caverns of Time).

Wind Trader's Band - quest reward from the short quest line that begins with Dealing With the Foreman. Notice the huge stamina for a ring!

Trinkets (two, again):
Figurine - Dawnstone Crab - crafted. A lot of high mid-end mats, but nothing too hard to get.

Adamantine Figurine - second boss in Auchindoun: Shadow Labyrinth.

Dabiri's Enigma - from the Netherstorm quest line that starts with Recipe for Destruction.

Froswolf Insignia or Stormpike Insignia. Maxed out Alterac Valley rep reward.

Timelapse Shard - exalted Keepers of Time. +25 stamins is very nice for a trinket slot, but once you hit 490 defense, resillience is beginning to get hit by diminishing returns extremely fast in PvE. I'd still use my AV rep reward over this, personally.

Ranged:
Melmorta's Twilight Crossbow - drops from one of the bosses in Black Morass, I think it's the first one. +15 stam? Nice!

Nethershrike - drops from second boss of Tempest Keep: Mechanar.

As far as enchants goes, which is best is of course to get a balance, but here's the list per piece, not removing the ones that are hard to get:

Chest - +150hp
Legs - Clefthide Leg Armor > Presence of Might > +12 dodge rating > +100hp > +8 def
Helm - Glyph of the Defender (Keepers of Time Revered) > Presence of Might (ZG enchant) > +12 dodge rating > +100hp > +8 sta
Shoulders - Exalted Aldor/Scryer defense shoulder enchant.
Gloves - +8 def > +15 agi > +8 sta
Boots - +12 sta > +8 def
Wrist - +12 sta > +9 sta
Cloak - +12 dodge rating (hard to get) > +12 agi > +120 ac
Shield - +18 sta > +15 block rating
Weapon - +15 agi > +15 str

Now you ask, "So, Sputt, if I get all of this on my warrior, just how will my stats be if I'm protection specced?"

I'm glad you asked! I added the top of the really easy to get items (assuming Aldor) to a CT profile with my current protection spec and Vindicator's Brand (exalted Aldor rep 1h sword). And Here's the link to that!

You'll be packing (as tauren, +5% hp racial) well over 12k hp, 12k armor (64.67% damage reduction!), 21.92% shield block rate (238 block value! Insane! your shield slams will actually pack a punch!), roughly 20% dodge, and over 18% parry. Your absolute damage reduction will land in the range of 80-85% of a mob's damage removed, with a capped out PvE crit resist (meaning, .5% chance).

Enjoy

[Edit]: Turns out that the belt listed requires a full completion of a long quest line and then finishing both Tempest Keep: Mechanar and Tempest Keep: The Botanica. Hardly easy to get, so I'll look for a replacement soon.
[Edit#2]: Coming in on second place for belt is yet another green! Woo!
[Edit#3]: New ranged weapon! Now it's one with some actual tanking stats (+stam)!
[Edit#4]: Added a weapon part, updated neck, added a trinket.

I don't have a tank, but I just wanted to say how much you rock Sputt!!! I can't even imagine how much time this must have taken you to put together.

I've looked at those lists, Mo, and I honestly don't like them. They show gear, sure, but which is better than what? For which spec? Are they easy to get, or should I just forget about them until Amicus can get start doing 10-15-25 mans? Their tank gear guide is nice, but isn't updated for BC.

Completely different format and reasoning

I've collected most of this gear now (not belt, helm, one ring and one trinket), and the CTprofile is a bit off. Unbuffed my hp is 11.9k, and my armor is right around there too. Even the defense numbers are off and should be closer to 475-480ish. The few upgrades that are left have a higher stam than the current gear, so with the listed gear you should be able to push 12k, even as a non-tauren, and quite possibly 12.7-13k as a tauren. The dodge is close to 20%, and will probably be 23%-25% with the last few pieces. Parry is also higher than CTprofile said it would be.

After testing it out during a rather extensive instance grind, I can say that my fears were founded more in the forum crying posts than in any kind of reality. It's true that I can't hold aggro for the life of me on green mobs (Durnholde Keep, as an example), simply because I don't take any damage worth mentioning, and the DPS of the classes made for it skyrockets compared to mine in lower mobs. When we got to the stuff made for 70s, however, (Botanica, Black Morass / Dark Portal, Shadow Labyrinth, Arcatraz etc) holding solid aggro on up to 4 targets at once wasn't any harder than it ever was before, even with a combat log consisting of "Dodge!", "Parry!", "(231 blocked!)". I did try a lvl 70 blue weapon (Milennium Blade, I think it was called - Black Morass drop with +stam and resilliance) over my Vindicator's Brand, and I noticed a drop in aggro capabilities, but nothing nearly as alarming as they want you to think.

Meaning, high defense tanks are still the way to go, and not taking enough damage is a non-issue

Hallelujah. I was beginning to worry about that.. and its funny you mentioned CoT cause that's exactly where i noticed this same problem. It wasnt impossible to hold aggro of course.. just a little harder for the reason you pointed out. Thanx again.

Well, I don't really play a priest, and don't know the exact conversion numbers for healing efficiency etc. I guess I -could- make one if you want me to, though..

It's good to see you happy with your spec and gear Sputt. The few druids that on the forums with high level experience beartanking agree. A good protection warrior that knows his stuff is in no danger of losing his job, to a bear or otherwise.

Hopefully at endgame I will make a nice sidekick for our protection guys that don't mind a bear offtank.
